black & white

Inspired by Justine, I thought I would take a few black & white photos this week. Just around the house. Indoors, some sea holly in a vase. Outdoors, early morning sun through the trees & a shadow on the wall.
In theory I know what makes a good black and white photo- strong contrasts, texture- but when I'm looking for black & white shots I can't always find them.

curves

A curved sandstone wall in the foreground, the many curves of the sails of the opera house & the curve of the harbour bridge. If you look closely you can see a group doing the bridge climb.

winter in Sydney

I feel very fortunate to have been able to head to the the city twice this week and be a tourist in my home town.  Sydney's weather has certainly put on a show with glorious sunshine, sparkles on the water and people out and about making the most of it. Magical.

a secret garden

Today I went wandering with a friend around Lavender Bay in search of  Wendy Whitely's secret garden. We found it! Such a beautiful spot on a glorious winter's morning. It is nestled above the harbour, full of greenery, windy paths, stone staircases & handrails made from branches.

 Lovely views, blue skies  & sunny patches- a very pleasant way to spend the morning.

hobbies

My sister in law is passionate about vintage and recycled things. She is very creative and makes art from bits and pieces including old scrabble boards and tiles (among many other clever things). I asked her if I could photograph her doing her thing  because "people and their hobbies" is the subject of a challenge that I'm doing this month.

It was different to the sort of photography that I usually do- observational & spontaneous.
I had to set up the shot, be a bit of a stylist. I didn't find it easy at all. I guess that's why they call it a challenge.
These are some of the photos that I took the second time I went to visit her.

::stills

We had such a lovely long weekend by the beach. It actually was quite rainy & cold so much of the time was spent indoors- playing games, reading, listening to music & eating.  However, we were very fortunate to have a few sunny patches where we could get out for a walk.

rainbows

There was a beautiful rainbow outside our place on Sunday night. It was hard to get the whole rainbow in the frame & for me the colours were hard to capture....but, rainbows are quite amazing aren't they?
